Confined in a Soviet penal advanced camp in 1941, Polish painter Józef Czapski chose a special formulation to cope: He lectured to the opposite prisoners on Marcel Proust’s novel In Search of Lost Time. On this week’s episode of the Futility Closet podcast we will describe Czapski’s heroic challenge and the pleasing significance of literature to the prisoners of oppressive regimes.

We will also lope some lemons and puzzle over a girl’s birthdays.
