Android: How to Use Swipe Controls to Manage Your Gmail Inbox on iOS

Google announced swipe gesture controls are coming to Gmail iOS starting today, and should be available to all iOS Gmail users soon. Though the update doesn’t add any new commands to Gmail, it makes it much easier to quickly manage your inbox by letting users customize what left or right “swipe” actions do.

For most people, an in-app notification should let you know the new feature is available and provide a quick link that takes you to the customization menu, but you can also find it in Gmail’s in-app settings by going to Settings > Swipe Actions. You can then specify separate actions for swiping left and right.

(These functions are also available for Android Gmail users under Settings > General settings > Swipe actions.)

The available options include:

  • Archive (default action) – Archived messages can be found in the “All mail” tab.
  • Delete – Sends mail to trash, where it’ll stick around for 30 days then be permanently deleted.
  • Mark as read/unread – swipe once to mark as read, swipe again to revert to unread.
  • Move to – You can specify a specific location or inbox to send you messages to.
  • Snooze – Temporarily removes an email out of your inbox. You can find snoozed mail in the “Snoozed” tab.

You can also disable either the left or right swipe gesture by selecting “None.”
